• Many children all over the world live on the streets. They do not get proper meals, healthcare, education and they live in a very unhealthy and unsafe environment. Also in Semarang, central Java, Indonesia you can see these kids on the busy street corners. Little children are being used to make money for their parents by begging on the streets. In some cases parents “rent out” children to other people who use them to make money on the streets. The children live in terrible circumstances, come mostly from poor, sometimes broken families or families coping with problems as drugs, alcohol, gambling, unemployment, sex abuse etc.

    Enough reasons to take action!

Indoshelter gives these children the possibility to get pre-school education and homework guidance in a clean, healthy and happy environment.

The new year has started, and we are ready for a year full of energy, more education, medical program update, high school students, entrepreneurship, creative development and a lot of fun!!!

Our goals for 2010 are;

  • Cooking – learning about food
  • Making your own business plan with cooking and with sewing
  • Continue the creative, English, math program
  • Continue the medical/dental program, Kate a new volunteer who is a nurse will take this task on. She will make the medical program up and running better then ever before!
  • Community, be involved and have a good liaison with the RT and all the people in it. People can use the shelter for their own use, like parties, meetings. We have the following conditions. If people want to use the shelter; it’s free, no gambling or alcohol are aloud, Ina, Alice or Ratna should be informed, if they use water or electricity it will cost 5.000 per time.
  • Have mothly themes
  • Computer, learn to typ and use word. No internet, movies, games etc are needed right now.
  • Involve the mothers, maybe in the beginning they will only watch, but eventually they will learn how to take care and help to develop their children.

IMG00175-20091126-1017As our goals are to educate children and their parents about good health, food and hygiene, we are keen on this. Keyko noticed that the kids were often dirty and smelled a bit…so we made this into a game! We organised a bath contest for the mothers. They learned what a good bath means and why it is important, also after the bath there was cutting nails and cleaning IMG00167-20091126-0942IMG00170-20091126-0953ears with baby oil and a cotton bud. It was a great and educating day, with a lot of smiles, some drinks and a winner of course!

She said she was happy that her school was able to join this event and it will motivate her students to be more interested to learn English. After this Yani a student of Indoshelter came on stage and performed the TARI MERAK or peacock dance.

After this pleasant break Mrs. Mardian van Raaij came on stage and talked about her country the Nederlands. She wore the traditional Dutch custom for woman in the winter. And she looked very pretty. She talked about her activities with Indoshelter and many people were interested to know more about Indoshelter. There were many questions about Indoshelter from the students and teachers. Mrs Mardian was very happy to answer all of them. The program continued with the performance by the Indoshelter students with an Indian dance called DANDIYA. It was choreographed by Mrs. Ritu Kumar and Miss Keyko. The kids got some very good responses!

This intermezzo suited perfect to announce the next speaker; Mrs. Ritu Kumar. She talked about her lovely country India. She wore very nice sari and she looked beautiful and exotic with her traditional clothes…She explained many things about India like the ‘Dandiya’ and also talked about the traditional clothes. She even sang a very famous song ‘OST Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and when most of the students followed her singing it sounded even more colourful. Then the program continued with the performance of acoustics guitars players from the English Soul Community. They sang 2 songs: Leaving on the Jet Plane and Irreplaceable, music arrangements by Tanti and Mita (English Soul Community). Again the audience enjoyed it a lot.

Because the prizes from KGI are wanted a lot and keep them active in their English. He also taught the Australian song called ‘G’day G’day’ and everyone sang it together, it was terrific!!!!….

As Karin is living in Thailand it is difficult for her to organize the daily finance at the shelter. First we had Martien, but she has left Indonesia. Now Alice Lukas is joining the Indoshelter team and will do the finance in Semarang. Karin will of course take care of the finance overall, and make the yearly report. Witt only Ina, Mardian and Ratna left in Semarang we are very happy with this new member.  So a very warm welcome for Alice! Lateron Alice will introduce herself!

As we want to be part of the community we try to be involved in what is happening around us. And this seems to work, we still get children coming to us, the neigbors are friendly and we now even had a request from the RT (the manager of the neighborhood) He asked if he could use the shelter for the ‘Halal Bil Halal’. The reception after the Ramadam. We are happy we are getting more and more involved in this comunity, this way we can reach out to more people, and who knows slowly also adults would like to get reading and wring lessons?!

We keep them busy with new things every time, and they keep us surprised, every time!

On Thursday Augustus 2 2009. 11 Kids from the SIS (Semarang International School) visited Indoshelter. They came there with Mr Chris, Ms Eka, Mr Supri and some mums. All the kids where very happy to meet eachother. They played together and had lunch also had some ice cream.

Keiko and Tanti where also there and gave a welcome performance, a traditional dance. The kids played games which where lead by Mr imam and Ms Eka. The first game was that every kid had to choose a picture of an animal and then they must make the soundof this animal. With the sound, they must go to another child to see if they can find the same sound, well same animal. They loved it! Slamet had the snake and went to Mr Iman… ssss ssshhhh  who also made a sssshh sshhhh sound,  then they became friends in the group. A great way of meeting and playing together!

The Indoshelter kids where very happy to meet the SIS students. One week before the Indoshelter kids prepared to do the welcome performance dance and song. Also the SIS student where very interested (this term they have to learn about community and living). After playing games, they had a meal SIS provided from ‘Timlo Solo restaurant’, then having an ice cream! Which is a big treat for the street children, thet hardly ever have ice cream!!
